New mental health services could be offered soon for the youngest of patients at risk for developing Autism.  Not much is known about this mental health condition, but there has been plenty of recent study on Autism in order help those suffering from it lead better more satisfying lives.  This study run by researchers from the Kennedy Krieger Institute in Baltimore found that it is possible to diagnose Autism by as early as 1 year old in about half of all children who will eventually develop Autism.

This is great news because the early Autism is caught in children the better chances they have of leading a more normal life.  Special programs and educational classes can be started even sooner to help these kids learn what they need to know to function in society and even socially.  This early diagnosis can also help parents prepare and study for the conditions and effort involved in rearing an Autistic child.  Mental health services may soon be instituting programs for the youngest Autistics.

Researchers also put together a helpful list of signs of Autism in children between the ages of 16 and 36 months.  The following signs are possible indicators of autism and a reason to check with your doctor about your children’s mental health.

• Child won’t initiate communication with other kids or you.
• Child doesn’t seem to engage with people in sharing social and emotional experiences, as in you have some trouble initiating ‘bonding time’ with your child.
• Child plays with toys in a manner they aren’t designed for.  As in they won’t use a play phone to make pretend calls, but may simply pick it up and drop it repeatedly.
• Child uses fewer words, sounds and gestures than is normal for age group to communicate needs
